Different strokes for different folks *shrug* I think Australian shows are dubbed as "series" as well rather than seasons. We tend to follow the UK way of doing things a lot. Then there are those ever long running soap operas that seem to go on forever

I grew up on soaps. Still follow one that my mother watched when I was a child. She does also. I know this will sound crazy but since they are in our homes every day, they almost seem like family. It just broke my heart when they ended one of the ones we watched daily. At least they had a beautiful wrap-up to end that one. Happily ever after and all that. But I still hate the show that replaced it and refuse to even watch a minute of it. The funny thing is that here, the soaps are also called serials. The one soap I was fascinated with when I was younger was Dark Shadows. I can't tell you how mad I was when SciFi stopped airing the repeats. That show gave me a lifelong love of vampires. Claire, I was stunned to read that it was also a favorite of Johnny Depp. The last I read about it, he got the rights to it and is planning to make a movie based on the series. That's part of the reason that I started to realize that I might as well give up the battle.

Oooh, LOL! Uh oh Interesting to have a soap about vampires, hmm... The one I watch here is Home & Away, hahaha. So lame and poorly acted in some parts but I find it a bit of a laugh sometimes

It was a fun show. It was on in the mid to late '70s. Very campy following. It was as cheesy as you could get. Props moving. Mistakes shown on air. But it was funny to watch. Barnabas Collins (the vampire) was fascinating. He played a vampire who was willing to try anything to be rid of the curse of being a vampire. Of course, the best shows were the ones when he would have a lapse and show those teeth. They had a convention on my birthday in the '80s. When I heard the commercial for the convention on tv while I was going to sleep one night, I insisted that my husband (then b/f) take me into NYC to see it. He refused. I wouldn't let him get any sleep. Just kept turning over every couple of minutes to curse him out until he gave in. He probably figured that it was the only way that he was going to get any sleep that night. LOL He had fun when he went. Linda Blair (The Exorcist) was there as well so he was happy. I couldn't care less who he looked at as long as I got to see Barnabas. I'm still ticked though that I lost the 2 autographed pictures I got from him. I couldn't find them anywhere when I moved here from New York. I was just heartsick. Barnabas gave me a lifelong fascination with vampires.
I just hope that Depp will do the part justice if he does turn it into a film. It would seem like he might since from what I've read, he was also fascinated by the show when he was a kid. I'm just afraid that if I saw him running around playing a vampire that I would end up just totally hooked on him.
I've never heard of Home & Away. They just started a new show here about a vampire who's a private detective. 2 episodes so far and I missed the second one. Of course he's a good vampire who will only drink blood from a blood bank.
I had to laugh at the Doctor Who 2 parter that just played here. It took me a while to recognize the voice of the bad guy who wanted to turn everyone into Cybermen. I got a kick out of it when I realized that it was Barty Sr. So that's twice now that DT killed off that actor.

That sounds like a pretty cool show actually, LOL! I think a lot of people would love Vampire!Depp Yeah I read about that private detective vampire show elsewhere - seems a bit copycat to other things really, especially 'Angel' which was virtually the same premise when you think about it, heh! Then again Angel was probably a rip-off of something else too (well, spin off from Buffy at least, hehe) LOL yep DT's "killed off" Roger Lloyd Pack in two things they've both been in now

It was a cool show. Too bad it was back in the days before VCRs. I think it is out on tape or DVD now but I doubt I would care for the price. They made 2 separate movies that I do have on tape but I don't care for them. Barnabas isn't in one and he gets killed in the other one. Barnabas does not get killed off and that movie just pissed me off.
I do believe you're right. People would love the Vampire!Depp which is why I have mixed emotions about the production coming to life. I'm not sure I could handle the thought and sight of him running around biting necks.
More than a few shows on now are copy cats or flat out rip offs of popular shows. I doubt there's an original thought left to writers and producers. At least none they would be willing to take a chance on.
I didn't know the name of the actor who played Barty Sr., didn't even know who Barty Jr. was until Doctor Who, but I can't help but wonder if he will want to act in another movie with him again. He doesn't seem to have much luck against him. LOL

Oh that would be annoying, seeing your favourite killed off. I always hate that in the shows I like. It kept happening in Buffy and Angel - not happy! Yeah I agree with you on the lack of original ideas. I guess that's why there are so many annoying reality shows around nowadays as well, blah! Hehe yeah his name is Roger Lloyd Pack. He was in a really funny UK comedy series called The Vicar of Dibley as well.

Hi Claire, as for the Dark Shadows movies, they didn't seem to follow the show's storyline. Barnabas never got killed off in the series. He played a poor misunderstood vampire who didn't want to be one. In the movie he played an evil vampire. Now I can see why your b/f dislikes Dr. Who so much. Continuity is everything.
That is probably why there are so many reality shows on. Besides being cheaper to make, they don't have to think too hard to come up with ideas for those shows. I detest them and have never watched them.
I don't think that we got The Vicar of Dibley over here. I don't recall ever seeing it if we did.

Aah yeah that is so annoying, I hate it when continuity is thrown out the window for these things, and yeah that is what my b/f hates about New Who. Ok it's cool to give things a fresh angle, but it's not cool to ignore the original concept and disrespect it so much. Yeah not into reality shows myself - although I have been watching Idol this year, LOL! My favourite was booted early on though so I don't really care much now. Vicar of Dibley is available on DVD in the US, just for reference

I can understand wanting to freshen things up a bit, but not at the expense of killing off the main character. I assume these were stand alone movies but they had to figure that the majority of those who would want to see it were already fans of the show. Just incredible stupidity on the producers part. I will try and remember to look for the Vicar series on DVD but since I am stuck out in the boondocks, there isn't always the greatest selection. And I just don't trust shopping online.

Yeah killing off the main character is just stupid really, although... I guess I wasn't totally happy at the end of Star Trek Nemesis either, heh I shop online a lot and it's quite good actually, especially living here where we get the raw end of the stick with a lot of things. Amazon and Amazon UK are pretty good though. I've bought a lot of things from both and I've received everything I've ordered - except for 2 items I'm still waiting on from UK but I think they got caught up in the postal strike. If they're not here by the end of this week I'll be emailing Amazon UK though, they're very good about getting back to customers - they gave me a refund on something not too long ago.

I could never get into Star Trek. I've never been a big fan of Sci-Fi. I remember my brother watching it every week. I would just leave the room.
You still haven't gotten those things from Amazon? That just stinks. Wasn't one of them supposed to be for your b/fs birthday? Hopefully he's the understanding type. But why would Amazon use regular mail instead of one of the special delivery services? They're much more reliable and can trace packages.

I was never really a sci-fi fan either really, but I saw some episodes of Star Trek The Next Generation and sort of "fell in love" with Data So I got into it, and it's actually pretty good. I like it for character development and interaction rather than the sci-fi aspect. RE Amazon - You can select what sort of mail you want something to be sent by. Normally I just use whatever their "normal" method is, the cheaper option, and the item will arrive here within a week. I set one to be sent via priority mail and it arrived within a few days - but I think that managed to bypass the postal strike. It was way more expensive though. Yeah one is a present for my b/f, and he knows what's going on so he's ok with that, very understanding. I'll email Amazon tomorrow night or Monday if it's not here by tomorrow. I'm not sure if they'd be able to do much, but they might be able to find out where the packages are, or something.

Rotten luck that the strike had to happen at the same time you were expecting a gift for your b/f. Luckily he's the understanfing type. How come every time I visit this thread now, I can't get the image of Johnny Depp running around with fangs out of my head? I don't know whether to get pissed off or just hot.

Claire, if you're interested in reading about Dark Shadows, check out //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Shadows I found things I hadn't even known or remembered about the show. It ran from 1966-71. They claim that Tim Burton and Madonna name themselves as fans and that Depp wanted to BE Barnabas when he was a child. It also says that Variety reported on July 26th that Warner Bros. was teaming up with Johnny Depp to produce a new feature based on the show. You'll have to type the address in since it doesn't work for some reason on this page but it is correct and you can get there by typing it in.
