All yesterday I was thinking 'oooh I wonder if T-Bird has seen it yet!'. Thank you for posting so soon, cos I couldn't wait to read what you thought! Haunting is a word I see a lot of when people describe their BBM experience. Unlike most movies/shows where I go out of my way to avoid spoilers, I have been completely soaking myself in detail about this movie - I figured that by knowing the story - and esp. about knowing the ending, it wouldn't matter. I am hoping I haven't de-sensitised myself to the impact when I do finally FINALLY get to see it. There's some spoilery things I'd love to discuss with you, but maybe I should start a spoilers thread? Or wait a bit? Ooh, and let me know what the Proulx book is like when you get it! I have only read BBM, and sort of wonder whether anything else she has written could ever touch me as much as it did. One last thing, what was the audience like? Did they behave? I have read some appalling things about inappropriate laughter - I mean really...why go to the bother of seeing it if you are only going to take the piss!

I am hoping I haven't de-sensitised myself to the impact when I do finally FINALLY get to see it. You see, I tried to go to opposite way. I didn't want to know too much as I wanted to feel the ful effect, and boy I can tell you, it did affect my dreams last night!! Do whatever you want my love, I don't mind either way. If you want to talk about it now, go ahead! ;D Actually I as really quite impressed with the turnout for it. Admittedly we did go to the most arty of the multiplexes in London to see it, but it was nearly sold out (for the 2.50pm performance!), and it was full of gay couples, groups of gay men, men and women on their own, young and old. Actually, I think me and Kev might've been one of the only set of straight couples there! It was a great atmosphere. People were laughing at the right parts, and silent as the grave during the serious ones. There wasn't even a hint of uncomfortableness during the sex/kissing scenes. It was a great crowd for a great film!

Oh...definitely - if I hadn't had read the story I would have been avoiding spoilers like crazy. But I figured I was already spoilt so... SPOILER ALERT :I'm interested in what you thought about Ennis thinking Jack had died the way the rancher did when E. was a boy. Did it really happen that way, or is Ennis jumping to a conclusion? Excellent. I'm very pleased to read that it got the respect it deserved. I'm so uptight about this movie in some respects - I can't abide the thought of it not being respected. It's rather hypocritical of me considering I'm usually inclined to take the piss out of anything and everything.

That's an interesting one - cos I automatically assumed that the vision Ennis has about Jack dying was the real way he had died, and Lorraine was just lying to him to make it better for herself and for Ennis. Me and Kev discussed this afterwards and I still think that he was killed. Can't really give a good reason why, I just do.

So now he knew it had been the tire iron. In the novella it's clear that Ennis believes that this is how Jack died - but it's not established that he did get murdered for sure. Oh god, it's just so horrible and heartbreaking. But I still can't wait to see it.

Seriously, your heart will go out with Jack so much in this movie. It mad me feel quite angry at times thinking that Ennis threw his love and devotion away so stubbornly. But Heath is so amazing in the role. I really hope he does get the Golden Globe he's been nominated for.
But overall, I couldn't take my eyes off Jake! Damn that man is too good looking!!

Not to take anything away from Heath and his amazing performance, but I feel so hurt for Jake that he isn't getting a stack of nominations left right and centre. From the clips I've seen, he's brilliant. The bit where they are saying goodbye for the first time, and Jack is asking Ennis if they'll see each other again - god those pleading puppy eyes, and the little smile. HOW COULD ENNIS WALK AWAY FROM HIM??? *pounds heart* <----it gets me right there!

From the clips I've seen, he's brilliant. No, you're absolutely right. It must be hard for him not to be nominated, but in all honestly, it is Heath's film. It's Ennis' story and he's in the majority of scenes. Also, as he is the one struggling with the situation, you know that's more worthy of an award in the old fuddy-duddy's eyes. But Jake is amazing too. My heart really bled for him in the movie, it really did!

I haven't read anything about it, but by the sounds I feel so for them....so desperate to be loved and be happy and knowing how hard it would be if they were truthful

Actually, I found it totally bizarre! It really made me kind of go "Eh? Why did that happen?" It wasn't gratuitous in any way, but it was odd! The kissing was much nicer, but I would've liked there to have been more!

Amy, just must go and watch it as well when it comes out. I think everyone should be made to go see it so that they might understand how difficult it is for gay people to accept what they are. I'm trying to find a slot in my schedule so i can go again...

I'm trying to find a slot in my schedule so i can go again... I've heard there is a message board on the BBM official site where people are sharing their coming out (or NOT coming out) stories. I haven't read it though cos I think I would be even more of a blubbering mess than I am already.

I can imagine I would be weeping reading it as well!
Some people are just so brave. I have such respect for them.
