I was just having a discussion with John about him wanting to show his new English friend the top five quintessential Aussie films that define who we are as Australians. We both agreed that Gallipoli should be included (even though I can't watch the end, cos it makes me cry too much)...but what else? What are your top five films that define who we are as Aussies?

Picnic at Hanging Rock sprang to mind as an Australian film - but I personally don't actually relate to it as something that defines Australia or being Australian. I fully relate to The Castle. Have you ever seen an old Australian movie called Jedda? One of my fave Australian movies is The Sum of Us. Subject matter aside (yes okay, it's Trishalicious...) it's a Valentine to the beauty of Sydney. The opening scene with Jack Thompson captaining a ferry, and Russell Crowe jogging home from rugby practice, to the strains of the Crowdies doing 'Sister, Madly'. *sigh* love it.

The Hard Word has got Guy Pearce and Rachel Griffiths in it. It's a crime movie. It got ok reviews but I really liked it but then again I was the only person in the cinema watching it, and I was very tired!! www.imdb.com/title/tt0280490/I would like to see other Aussie stuff as i really love the Aussie sense of humour.

The Hard Word wasn't a bad way to spend a couple of hours. Dirty Deeds is good too, it's an Aussie crime movie, set in the 60's.
Have you seen Chopper, T-Bird. It's fantastic, if you like crime movies.

There are two things i dont like about you Felicia...your face. So shut both of them! OMG Pricilla is one of my all time favourite movies. I think its VERY Australian, but perhaps not 'quintessential Australia' but more the alternative scene... The Castle definately. Gallipoli (i to cannot watch the end...after having it rammed down my throat every freaking year at high school!) Puberty Blues? MWHAHAHA Man from Snowy River? A Town like Alice Looking For Alibrandi i dont know...im not a big fan of aussie movies...

I think its VERY Australian, but perhaps not 'quintessential Australia' but more the alternative scene... The more I think about Priscilla, the more I do think it is quintessentially Australian because... 1. It is set in both urban and rural Australia 2. There's some indigenous content 3. We all know...95% of Australian blokes will frock up at the slightest bit of encouragement. (I submit all The Footy Shows as evidence, your honour) 4. ABBA in the soundtrack. 5. Bill Hunter is in it, and strewth mate, he's the most Australian Australian to be in an Australian movie, cobber. *hoiks and spits into dust* 'Have you got the Texas Chainsaw Mascara?'

Oh yeah, you have to see Chopper! It's based on a real bloke!
I have a lot of fav aussie films, but very few are 'quintessential' I guess. For example, Bad Boy Bubby, Angel Baby, The Cars that ate Paris, Dogs in Space, Metal Skin...
I want to see that new aussie horror filum that's out...I think it's called something creek...too drunk to recall...
