I think this is an interesting topic for discussion To be honest... I'm "over" the whole thing. It was interesting in the beginning, but now it's getting old. I didn't mind Australian Idol the first couple of times, but the 3rd one was boring - none of the contestants appealed to me at all and I just stopped caring. I was never into Big Brother - the idea of watching random nobodies sitting around a house doing nothing is rather... pointless... Survivor seems contrived to me and I find it boring as well. The Amazing Race is like some kind of weird blockbuster movie that just doesn't do anything for me either. So yeah I guess it's safe to say that I hate it Grown to hate it even more that it's just on so much and takes the place of decent TV programming. Big Brother is on the same channel as The Simpsons - so it gets higher preference - which means we don't get to see any so called "new" episodes of the Simspsons until BB is over Basically I just find it irritating. So I want to know who likes Reality TV and who watches it - what appeals to you about these shows? Why do you watch them? What gets you watching in the first place?

*ponders*
I'm not terribly interested in reality shows that are games or competitions - like Idol, or The Apprentice or Dancing with The Stars. I get sucked into the BB vortex now and then, cos it is like eavesdropping in a cafe, and I'm a bugger for that. (I kid myself it's something that is good for writers to do...)
I don't mind some of the British ones like Faking It, or The Property Ladder.
BB, aside, I think if I do enjoy reality tv, it's mainly the low-key, not so hyped ones.

Hmmm yeah...
I guess also, would "lifestyle" programmes come under the same banner as "reality"?
Because there are a few of those I like watching every so often, but they have a purpose... I think that's the difference. They offer good advice and help...

Excellent point.
I had to stop and think about the differences between reality tv, lifestyle tv, and good old fashioned documentaries!
Reality tv: pointless entertainment.
Lifestyle tv: informative and entertaining.
Documentaries: educational/thought provoking/informative.

Yep... there are definitely differences with each one.
Yes the Reality TV thing... it is pointless... LOL! We're lacking decent shows on TV lately - the reason being Reality TV.
What's wrong with escapism?
I have to commend Channel 7 for repeating Fawlty Towers, even if it is on at a bit of an odd time.
LOL A lot of things are irritating to me lately...

I suspect that reality tv might be waaaaay cheaper than dramas or comedy etc. Thus if it rates well, is cheap to make, then that's why the networks are going for it in a big way.
Thank goodness for SBS and the ABC...

Yes my thoughts exactly. And it's sickening to me, heh! I want to create my own station, LOL! Yes... and Foxtel (to an extent), and my DVD collection

Who'll be the Garth to my Wayne? At least it would probably be more interesting than the shit that's on now If I had squillions of dollars I'd buy the rights to show things like The Goodies, TLoG, Little Britain, Dr Who, and most other things British, as well as Lano & Woodley, Full Frontal, Micallef Programme, Family Guy, The Simpsons, etc...
